14 March 2012 | Special Olympics Australia will host the inaugural Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games in 2013.
The games will be held in the NSW town of Newcastle in December 2013, following the announcement that Australia had beaten out strong bids from cities in India and Malaysia.
The event will see Australia welcome more than 1,700 Special Olympics athletes, 600 coaches, 4,000 volunteers, and approximately 200,000 spectators from 25 nations across the Asia Pacific regions, who will compete in a range of sports.
For more information, visit the Asia Pacific Games page.
Special Olympics Queensland athletes enjoyed a day of golf at the inaugural Inclusive Golf Championship at Indooroopilly Golf Club in November. The Championship catered for golfers of all abilities and were hosted by our sports partners Golf Queensland. For more details including results visit the Golf Queensland website. More news was posted by Golf Australia and PGA Australia.
For the first-time ever Special Olympics athletes have participated in the Gatorade Queensland Tri-Series thanks to the support of Queensland volunteers Cheryl Haack and Debbie Jukes. One male team and one mixed team participated in the triathlon at Robina on the Gold Coast on 20 November 2011 with extraordinary results. Although none of the athletes had competed in a triathlon before, the male Special Olympics team won the gold medal in their category and the mixed team narrowly missed out on bronze. Congratulations to Cheryl, Debbie, and her husband, Colin and athletes Zac Kimber, Jasmine Williams, Chris Lyons and Kai Armstrong. Read more

Queensland Law Enforcement Officers through the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) have been supporting Special Olympics Queensland with fundraising and awareness since 2006. So, we’ve launched a web page to celebrate their good work. Find out how officers across the state are helping us share the joy of sport by visiting the Queensland Law Enforcement Torch Run web page. HOT OFF THE PRESS - LETR QLD presented the State Committee and Queensland athletes with a cheque of $25,000 from their 2011 fundraising efforts. In 2012, they hope to raise $52,000 for the our state program.
Special Olympics Queensland volunteer and 2010 Hall of Fame inductee Susan Grealy has stepped down from the National Selection Committee after eight-years, which is the maximum tenure for a committee role. The National Selection Committee is the national body responsible for implementing transparent processes for team selections such as the National and World Games. Susan will be missed from the committee and we congratulate her for continued dedication to bringing quality sport and competition to Special Olympics athletes.
Congratulations to Steve Bourke from Special Olympics Brisbane West who was recognised as an outstanding volunteer at the 2011 Valuing Volunteers and Recreation Awards in November. Queensland Sports Minister The Hon. Phil Reeves presented Steve with his medal in recognition of his ten-year commitment as a Special Olympics volunteer, coach and mentor. Read the Minister's press release at www.cabinet.qld.gov.au
In November, Brisbane North hosted a successful state swimming competition after a shaky start when all pools in the area were closed due to safety reasons. Luckily the community lent a hand with the local high school providing an alternate venue and the local swimming club, the Stafford Stingers, helping stage the event. Special Olympics volunteers rose to the occasion allowing young swimmers to compete and possibly be selected for the 2012 Special Olympics Junior National Games which will be held in Newcastle in NSW in December. The Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe MP, Queensland’s Minister for Employment, Skills and Mining opened the event in front of many proud families, friends and coaches.
The Play By The Rules website, supported by our Principal Partner, the Australian Sports Commission has many great resources and tools for volunteers and coaches. Either go to their website direct or go to the Resources For Members section where there is a Play By The Rules category along with other information for members of Special Olympics Australia.
Recently Special Olympics Queensland athlete Mitchell James won the award for most outstanding athlete with a disability at the Tennis Queensland Awards.
Mitchell was part of the 2011 Special Olympics World Games team that competed in Athens. He won two gold medals and is now undertaking his trainee coaching course with Tennis Queensland.
Mitchell's mum Debbie said, 'We're proud of Mitchell. He's been able to participate in tennis because of the great work of Special Olympics and Tennis Australia. His ambition is to teach tennis to children with special needs.'
Special Olympics Queensland are proud to have fielded a basketball and football team at the inaugural Trans-Tasman Tournament held in Wellington, New Zealand from 2-5 November 2011. For results and pictures go to our Trans Tasman Tournament page.
