As the world celebrates International Women’s Day on 8 March, Georgina Frost, Head of Delegation for Team Australia, is gearing up to lead an inspiring group of athletes to the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

A passionate advocate for inclusion and opportunity, Frost considers it a privilege to support the team in reaching the pinnacle of their sporting aspirations.

"I'm very excited about taking the team, and I'm very passionate," Frost said. "But what drives me most is helping and supporting our Special Olympics athletes to achieve their goals."

Leading a national team comes with challenges, but Frost has embraced the opportunity to build unity among athletes and officials, many of whom have not worked together before.

"We all bring past experiences, but the key has been working together to create an even better, more unified team. It’s about learning and growing, not just as individuals but as a team," she said.

One of the biggest hurdles for the team has been limited access to snow. As a Southern Hemisphere nation, Australia’s winter season is short, and the last two ski seasons have been poor. Despite this, athletes and their families have shown unwavering commitment, with many training overseas in Japan, South Korea, and Canada to prepare for the Games.

"The dedication from both athletes and their families has been incredible," Frost said.

"It’s an expensive sport, and the fact that so many have made the effort to travel and train overseas shows just how committed they are."

Frost also had words of encouragement for her athletes as they embark on this life-changing experience.

"Enjoy it. Be proud. But also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and lean on the support of your coaches and officials. Some of our team members are quite young, and this will be a defining moment for them. There are people here to support you—so enjoy this experience."

As Team Australia prepares for the Opening Ceremony early Sunday morning Australian time, Frost hopes this journey will be a lasting source of pride and confidence for the athletes.

"This is a group of passionate, dedicated individuals who have faced many challenges—not just in sport, but in how society perceives them. To have the opportunity to do something extraordinary, to stand up and say, ‘This is who I am, and this is what I have achieved’—that is truly special. Not many people get that opportunity, and it’s something they will carry with them for life."

As the world shines a spotlight on women breaking barriers, Frost’s leadership is a testament to the power of passion, teamwork, and inclusion. Her role in guiding these athletes is not just about competition—it’s about empowerment, resilience, and proving that with the right support, anything is possible.
