Special Olympics Australia’s Youth Carnivals are inclusive sport and physical activity carnivals for primary and high school students with intellectual disabilities.
The carnivals allow participants to experience sporting activities based upon Special Olympics, curriculum-aligned, Playing for All activity cards. These resources promote inclusion for students with intellectual disabilities and aim to get more students active by engaging them in fun and inclusive physical activity.
The Carnivals are made possible thanks to the support of NAB and Gallagher Australia.
Develop important skills
Youth Carnivals are single-day carnivals hosted in seven states around the country.
All students will experience the immersive Special Olympics games traditions such as the Law Enforcement Torch Run and the lighting of the Flame of Hope along with fun, active and social connection.
Students will rotate through four activity stations, each aimed at building physical skills, confidence, motivation and social engagement. Activities are based upon the Playing for All activities cards and develop skills such as throwing, catching, passing, jumping, cooperation and teamwork.
Activities will be delivered by a trained sports coach, supervised by Special Olympics staff and will be a fantastic opportunity for school communities to connect with inclusive, all-abilities coaches and local clubs.
Each activity station includes fun, engaging experiences that help develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours that give students confidence and motivation to lead active lives. All activities at the Youth Carnivals will be conducted within local COVID-safe guidelines.
