Meet Mel and Terry

Mel and Terry | Melbourne Inner East Club | Former Ten Pin Bowling Co-ordinators | 28 Years

Q: With so many other sport organisations and non for profits, why did you choose Special Olympics Australia?

Mel and Terry: At the time, it was the only organisation that could offer our son the opportunity to learn a sport (swimming initially)

Q: What is your favourite Special Olympics Sport? Or what sport did you play as a kid?

Mel and Terry: Swimming and Ten Pin Bowling

Q: Is there a particular moment, memory or achievement that stands out for you?

Mel and Terry: Starting the Ten Pin Bowling program, at Melbourne Inner East Club

Q: How has Special Olympics Australia impacted your life?

Mel and Terry: We have put in a lot of time, but we have been richly rewarded by seeing the growth and achievements of the athletes

Q: What difference have you seen the Special Olympics movement make on athletes or family members lives?

Mel and Terry: You need only see the smiles on the faces of the athletes, to realise they’re achieving their goals. The athletes love to win and love to get a medal. To many, it’s their only opportunity to succeed and be just like everybody else

Q: What would you say to someone considering volunteering for Special Olympics Australia?

Mel and Terry: We would say “put in as much as you can, and you’ll see the rewards”

Q: What might someone be surprised to learn about you?

Mel: I still can’t bowl!!
Terry: I’m now learning to play the piano.

Q: Where to from here, what’s next, what does the future look like for you?

Mel and Terry: Lots of holidays

Thank you, Mel and Terry!
