The event will see Australia welcome more than 1,700 Special Olympics athletes, 600 coaches, 4,000 volunteers, and approximately 200,000 spectators from 25 nations across the Asia Pacific regions, who will compete in a range of sports.

Special Olympics Victoria will launch a Young Athletes Pilot this Saturday December 3 to celebrate International Day of People with a Disability (IDPwD). Scheduled to start in February 2012, Young Athletes is an innovative sports play program for children with intellectual disabilities, designed to introduce them to the world of sports prior to Special Olympics eligibility at age eight.
The program has been introduced thanks to the support of the Mattel Children's Foundation, introducing children to the skills required to promote physical, cognitive and social development from ages two to seven. Young Athletes also welcomes family members into the world of Special Olympics and raises awareness about the abilities of children with intellectual disabilities. For more information, or to express your interest to participate, please contact Special Olympics Victoria on (03) 9877 2769 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Help us bring the joy of sport to more Victorians with an intellectual disability. If we raise $20,000 Special Olympics Victoria can provide regular sports opportunities for 266 new athletes. So get into the spirit of giving this festive season and help us make a difference to the lives of people with an intellectual disability, their families and their communities. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. To make a donation for Christmas please go to our fundraising page.

The National Selection Committee is the national body responsible for implementing transparent processes for team selections such as the National and World Games. Shirley-Anne will be missed from the committee and we congratulate her for continued dedication to bringing quality sport and competition to Special Olympics athletes.
